This program targets young adults between the ages of 18-24 and places them in local private sector employment for full-time and part-time work. In addition to unsubsidized placement efforts, we will also work to train and certify youth through the Work Readiness Certificate (WRC), a credential recognized by employers as a “job ready” certification. The program is operated in partnership with the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and LA Youth at Work.
WORK READINESS CERTIFICATION YOUTH SERVICE PROVIDER
The Community Development Department (CDD), The Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce and LAYAW, as well as the Youth Council, have developed a Work Readiness Certification that can ensure that work-readiness (as defined by business) is achievable within the system that prepares youth, and that youth can earn a certificate that will put them at the “head of the line” when seeking employment in the city. The Work Readiness Certification builds on and documents basic workplace, academic and employability skills that pertain to all industries at the entry level.
A Work Readiness Certificate is a portable credential that certifies to a potential employer that an applicant possesses the basic skills necessary to obtain and retain employment as defined by the employer. The foundation of the Work Readiness Certification is a simulation of the interview and hiring process that mimics the procedure for determining youth eligibility for employment that is consistent with employers’ expectations.
The Los Angeles Youth Opportunity Movement (LAYOM) in partnership with the school district will once again offer the Learn & Earn program this summer. The Learn & Earn program is a $2 million dollar initiative to assist CAHSEE non-passers with CAHSEE prep and provide them with part time summer employment.
This program targets 11th & 12th grade students that did not pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). Youth participants attend school in the afternoon and work part-time in the morning. In addition, participants will complete a Princeton Review course that focuses on the CAHSEE. Participants are expected to complete their work experience component through partnerships with the LAUSD & the Community Development Department.
