Youth Opportunity Movement - PROBATION PROGRAM
YO Youth
The Students For Higher Education (SFHE) program provides intensive intervention services for youth who have served time in Los Angeles County Probation Camps. The goal of the program is to move youth into post-secondary educational/occupational opportunities and reduce recidivism rates by providing education, training, mentoring/case management, leadership development, work-study, supportive services, and intensive transition support prior to and following youth being released from camp. The goal of the program is to increase the academic success of youth who are 6-18 months from release of Camp. Our goal is to enroll each of the graduates to Los Angeles Trade Tech College (LATTC) and provide an environment conducive to learning. The program will reintegrate the youth into the community, and assist the youth in achieving a productive, crime-free life.

Program Design
The program provides services to youth offenders 17-21 years old under the jurisdiction of the juvenile justice system who are returning to the community from incarceration, and who:
  • Have successfully completed the high school diploma/GED equivalent, or will obtain a high school diploma/GED
  • Are within six months of scheduled release to the community in order to receive services in a correctional setting
  • Upon release to the community from incarceration, must be enrolled in the SFHE program at Los Angeles Trade Tech College and under some form of juvenile or criminal supervision
  • In addition, we target youth offenders being released to the City of Los Angeles (within a 10 mile radius of LATTC, primarily East & South LA).The Youth Opportunity Movement Amends Program connects incarcerated youth, and those recently released, with resources in education and employment. Los Angeles Youth Opporunity Movement has case managers on site at Los Angeles County Probation Camps and offers direct services to prepare youth for a positive entrance back into the community. Participants take online classes through Los Angeles Trade Technical College and complete courses in employment preparedness. By connecting incarcerated and probation youth with resources, LAYOM reduces participants' return to juvenile detention camps by:
  • Referring youth to probationary conditions
  • Tracking youth's educational plan (strive for high school diploma)
  • Referring to a vocational/post-secondary education training/program
  • Linking youth to community activities
